      Rex VF225 Wood Lathe

Built in Sweden, the Rex woodworking lathe produced built in both early and late versions, the latter being the Model VF225, a simple but sturdily-built (180 kg) all-cast-iron machine intended for wood and light-duty metal turning. With a centre height of 225 mm and able to take 1000 mm between centres, it offered a good capacity in a compact footprint the drive, like most lathes of this pattern (including the Viceroy TDS and Wadkin Models  RS, RU RUH, BZL, BXL and BHL-150), coming from an electric motor held in the headstock-end plinth. Fitted with a 1400 rpm, 1 h.p. 3-phase motor the V-belt-driven speeds were 500, 950, 1800 and 3300 r.p.m. Unlike the similar Harrison Graduate, the lathe was not cast with bed and headstock as one, but with the two units bolted together, the spindle running in a pair of ball races. Outboard bowl turning was fitted as standard and the tailstock had a useful 100 mm of travel with the spindle taking a No. 2 Morse centre.
A selection of accessories was listed by the makers including a number of different lengths of hand T-rest (the vertical supports being split and closed down by bolts); a 130 mm 3-jaw chuck for metal turning; a compound slide with travels of 170 mm on the cross slide and 170 mm on the top slide - both fitted with zeroing micrometer dials (slide rest shown below is actually from a Solberga lathe); rotating and standard centres for the tailstock; two faceplates for inboard work, one 240 and the other 150 mm in diameter together with a single left-hand threaded 145 mm for outboard turning.

The bowl-turning rest is, of course, non-original
