      The Woolner - a brand whose history is unknown as either a small tool shop or machine-tool dealer - was simply a re-badged Sheffield-made Portass Model S.  Straight lines around the lettering on the bed indicate that the original Portass  pattern was modified only to the extent of having a name plate attached.

      Like many lathes with a similar design of headstock, this Woollier has suffered a fractured casting around the split spindle bearings - these being replaced by an owner with a proper 2-bolt clamp type, just like those on some late versions of the Portass S

      Home-made - but the 2-bolt caps are an effective repair to the original broken single-split type
