      Dainichi Universal Machine
      Tool DL6

Dainichi are well known for their range of Universal Machine Tools of which the basis (of the machine below) is a substantial lathe with a horizontal miller (with a 1-inch arbour) a very-heavily built No. 4 Morse taper drill press (speed range 50 to 750 rpm) - and a shaper.  Popular on Japanese ships they were, according to an experienced marine engineer, frequently fitted to those built by both Kawasaki and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries; the last vessel that he saw with a Dainichi being launched around 1985 from the Hudong Shipyard in Shanghi.
If anyone can furnish further details or pictures, catalogs or handbooks about this particular model, the author would be pleased to hear from you.
Dainichi built their first Universal Lathe, the DL6, in 1937 - with a much modified and heavier version being introduced in 1952. Their 41,000 square metre plant in Gifu, Japan, is still busy, turning out a range of very heavy conventional and CNC lathes and other machine tools.
